Website Design Concepts

While this list is not meant to encompass everything involved, it will promote the thought process involved when contemplating a new or existing project. Any type of database connectivity such as a shopping cart application introduces a whole new level of complexity resulting in another layer of questions and answer on the part of all active participants related to the project.

Answer:

Here are several points to consider:

  • Do you need assistance with domain name registration and/or web hosting?
  • If you host with Bryntel Technology, how many e-mail accounts will you need?
  • If you host your site with an outside source Bryntel will need access to the C-Panel with that service.
  • If the service is an entity other than Bluehost, Bryntel needs to know the specifications to the product. This would include MySQL databases, PHP installation and version information.
  • What are the thresholds for web storage and traffic throughput? (unlimited is required)
  • Does the facility have redundant power, redundant internet backbone access, and most importantly is there access to a live technician on-site if needed to troubleshoot problems in operation. That would include entry level techs that answer the support line and determine if the problem is on their end or yours. If the problem is determined to be on their end, will it be addressed in a reasonable amount of time?

It has been my experience that the person that is calling support needs to be experienced enough to actually know what is causing the problem before placing that call to support. The simple reason for this is:

  • Hosting companies will NEVER readily admit they are having any problems.
  • Server software patches and actual server replacement/upgrades within hosting companies are going on 24/7 and most are very lax in testing before implementing. This can sometimes create some very quirky anomilies in your web site.
  • The patches previously referenced can be for the operating system of the server, the web serving software, or the partioning of environments within the servers for the various customers in that shared resource. (We recommend that you check every 18 months and see if you are currently on the newest server or a legacy. Starting off as a new customer you are usually placed on the newest equipment.)
  • The amount of customers on a server can have an adverse effect or significant slow down during peak periods. What determines the cause of slowdown is not a function of how many customers are in the shared environment, but the amount of traffic each site is getting during specific time periods. This is monitored in real-time in the NOC (network operations center).

To date we view Bluehost as being a premier provider, while these problems even exist there, they have the best record of dealing with whatever problems we have encountered at Bryntel.

Here are several points to consider:

  • What content do you envision including?
  • Format of Site (Word Press, Templated HTML, Mobile Enabled, etc…)
  • Have you looked at other websites for ideas that appeal to you?
  • Do you currently have a web presence? If so, are you simply re-working the existing site or are you upgrading to completely new implementation. Bryntel will need access to all locations old and new, and the domain registration service if different from the legacy hosting company you are currently with.
  • Do you have a logo? Are you going to require additional artwork?
  • Describe any visual elements or styles which can or should be used (usually from existing marketing materials).
  • How will text content be delivered to Bryntel Technologies?
  • Will text require editing, formatting, spell checking?
  • How long are the documents, on average?
  • Do you need assistance with copywriting?
  • How many graphics/photographs do you plan to include? Are you going to require additional artwork?
  • In what form can the artwork be provided? (.jpg,.png,.tiff,.bmp, etc...)
